Ford Focus
The beauty of the five-door hatchback design is that it allows the cargo capacity of a small wagon, but without the breadbox look. Indeed, it is the practical versatility without penalty that is at the core of the design. While the three-door ZX3 boasts a funky and expressive look, access to the back seat is awkward by almost any standard. The ZX5's extra doors eliminate that, allowing easy access to all positions.
Beneath the hood, the standard 2.0-litre Zetec engine brings a refined work ethic. Rated at 130 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 135 pounds-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm, 80% of which clocks-in at about 1,200-rpm, this engine is quiet when cruising, but brings a sporty tone when pushed. It also gives the ZX5 a responsive, if less than fast, feel when mated to the five-speed manual transmission. This gearbox is a well-engineered unit, with the low first and tall top gears bringing a responsive launch and comfortable cruising. Better yet, the shifter has a connected feel, while the clutch is light and nicely progressive.
A wide track, long wheelbase and compliant suspension adds up to an agile car with excellent ride qualities. Up front are the usual MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar. In back, Focus employs a fully independent multi-link design. Factor in the light and linear power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, and the ZX5 has a feel that matches its hot-hatch persona. Indeed, it romped through the pylons. This is particularly true when Advance Trac is added. This stability control system compares driver input with vehicle attitude. Should the two differ, it counters mild understeer by braking the appropriate wheel while reducing engine output.
Safety-wise, the ZX5 enjoys a good anti-lock system that brings short controlled stops. Ford's Personal Safety System adds dual-stage front airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters. The available side airbags are a worthwhile option and certainly a rarity at this end of the market.
