Mazda Protege
Riding on MacPherson Struts up front and Mazda's Twin Trapezoidal links in back, and roll bars a both ends, the Protegé 5 truly surprised. First, the 195/50 R16 tires put a meaty print on the tarmac, consequently understeer is benign and, thanks to the tuned suspension settings, body roll is next to non-existent. Add to that a fast and responsive engine speed sensitive rack and pinion steering set up and the Protegé 5 ate the pylon test. Surprisingly, the handling prowess does not put a crimp in the ride comfort. Out on the open road large bumps are swallowed in Stride and sharp impacts like expansion joints pass almost unnoticed.
One of the concerns with previous Protegés was the rather lack-lustre power production. The Protegé 5 addresses this by squeezing a 2.0L twin-cam under the hood. With 130 hp and 135 lb-ft of torque on tap, its work ethic is up to the task of imparting a sense of urgency to throttle applications, while the clock says running to 100k takes 10 seconds, the feel is of a much faster car.
Two transmissions are offered, a 5-speed manual that brings a nicely defined gate and a light clutch or an electronically controlled 4 speed automatic.
Stopping power comes from a 4-wheel disc brake system that comes with standard anti-lock. The pedal is firm underfoot and easily modulated, bringing full on stops from 80k in a respectable 114 feet. Bonus marks for the electronic brake force distribution built into the anti-lock. This system replaces the old mechanical proportioning valve that reduce rear brake pressure as the weight shifts forward, which keeps the ABS intervention to a minimum.
On the safety front, the Protegé 5 brings the usual airbags, APS and child proof rear door locks. It also benefits from Mazda's Triple-H body construction. This design adds stiffeners in key positions. This forms a strong cage around the occupants; transferring the impact forces away from and around the passengers.
Price as tested: $19,895 + $1000 (AR) + $800 (moon roof) = $21,695
