Some Mini Coopers recalled for malfunctioning water pumps.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and BMW are recalling around 111,000 Mini Coopers equipped with a turbocharged engine. The potential hazard lies with the electronic circuit board. It controls the electrical water pump to cool the turbocharger and as an electrical fault, it may malfunction and smolder, possibly leading, in the worst case scenario, to an engine fire.

According to the NHTSA and BMW, the recall affects turbocharger-equipped Mini Coopers – basically the Cooper S and super fast John Cooper Works (JCW) models - manufactured from November 2006 through January 2011.

The model years of the following Mini Coopers models may be affected :

• 2007-2011 Mini Cooper S
• 2008-2011 Mini Cooper S Clubman
• 2009-2011 Mini Cooper S Convertible
• 2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman
• 2009-2011 Mini Cooper JCW
• 2009 Mini Cooper JCW Clubman
• 2010-2011 Mini Cooper JCW Convertible

In February, BMW is expected to begin notifying owners affected by this recall to bring in their Mini Cooper cars to local dealerships where mechanics will replace the water pumps for free.
